So, fresh off the press: London just got became an even more expensive city to live in!
The news that taxi hiring app, and modern-day startup Goliath, Uber will not have its licence to operate in London renewed is a major blow for travellers looking to save money when seeing the cites of London. (Not to mention those of us who have to live in this city).
According to the BBC, Transport for London, (the local government body responsible for the transport system in Greater London) concluded that the company was not “fit and proper” to hold a private hire operators licence for the city. TFL found that Uber’s, “approach and conduct demonstrated a lack of corporate responsibility which could have potential public safety and security implications”
In England, Uber have been rocked by a number of scandals involving failure to report criminal behaviour and undertaking appropriate checks on new staff.
This is a major shock for London, as the over 3.5 million people use Uber, who employ over 40,000 drivers in the city. However, Uber have of course announced that they will appeal the decision, so all may not be lost when it comes to budget travel in the city.
